Digital Photography

I fell into digital photography after uni and years after shooting film. I had always struggled to hone in on the right settings, formats, colours and nonsense that comes with digital cameras. I felt spoiled for choice and often gave up in overwhelmed frustration.

Shooting film with a greatly reduced number of settings was my norm. So, I applied the same practices to digital, narrowing down my options to a fixed ISO or a shutter speed not too fast.

And somehow, it clicked.

Now, I can confidently shoot still images I can truly feel proud of. And it's a bonus to be kinder on the wallet.

Film Photography

I felt an itch for photography while I was at uni studying videography. I was getting a strong grasp on the concepts of capturing an image on video, and I desperately wanted to exercise those skills in still images.

On trend and through the passion of the art, I took up film photography first. Something about the truly physical, analogue medium and having to get it right or not get it all fascinated me. The narrow choice of buttons and knobs to press and turn was a comfort and crutch to growing comfortable shooting still images.

Starting on an old soviet 35mm SLR, I soon wanted more. Graduating to a rickety old (also soviet) TLR for 120 film. I had caught the bug, I was then trawling TradeMe for any bargains I could spy.

Nowadays, I have a comfortable fleet of a mint Canon A1 for 35mm and a Zenza Bronica GS1 for 120 film. I'm in heaven.
